Other problem areas
Besides anxiety disorders cognitive-behavior
therapy (CBT) has a strong scientific support as an
effective psychotherapy for many other
psychological disturbances. At the left below the
link "Other problem areas" you can read about
symptoms and core features of a couple of other
relatively common psychological disorders. This
list is in no way exhaustive. Only a few problem
areas are described. In the assessment of
psychological disturbances and disorders it is
important to inquire which problems are primary and
which ones are a consequence of other
problems. It is however common that some
people suffer from two parallel problems. In such
cases it is sometimes adequate to treat one problem
at a time, and in other circumstances it is more
adequate to treat both problems simultaneously.
For almost all problem areas that are described
through the links at the left side there are
scientifically evaluated psychotherapy programs.
These psychotherapies (cbt) are usually based on
theoretical models that each specifically target
their respective problem area. This is a great
advantage since it is important to adapt each cbt
treatment to each clients specific problems. In
addition, it is a great advantage that there are a
large amount of research, clinical experiences and
theoretical models that forms a basis during a
treatment process. Such knowledge is adapted to
each clients specific problem. It is also important
to stress that research and clinical experiences
are constantly broadened and developed. Newly
developed cognitive-behavioral treatments are
constantly assessed (and also other forms of
psychotherapy). The aim is for psychotherapists to
adapt those treatments that are shown to be
effective for various psychological problems in
order to help their clients as best as possible.
The purpose on the long-term is to develop as many
effective psychotherapies as possible for a broad
range of psychological disturbances and disorders
as possible. This in order to ease peoples
suffering and help them to live a meaningful
life.
